Secretary Read Requests Emergency Funding for Election Security

Additional resources would provide voters with greater confidence and transparency amid federal attacks on elections

SALEM, OR — Today, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read proposed concrete steps to provide eligible Oregonians with more ways to return their ballots and make sure their votes get counted.

In testimony before a budget subcommittee of the Oregon Legislature, Secretary Read advocated for a total of $1.25 million in emergency funding to support Oregon’s elections as the federal government continues its attempts to control and undermine election integrity.

“Our goal is simple: every eligible Oregonian should have a clear and dependable way to cast a ballot and be confident that their vote gets counted,” Secretary Read said. “Expanding drop box access and providing a means for voters to track their ballot are some of the tools we have to protect Oregonians’ right to vote. I’m grateful to the Legislature for considering the request for emergency funding on behalf of Oregon voters.”

The funding request has three main components: supporting greater access to official drop boxes, providing an opt-in ballot tracking system for voters, and taking the next step to clear out old data in the inactive voter list.

Recently, the Oregon Secretary of State’s office conducted a comprehensive study to identify gaps in drop box availability around the state. Multiple locations were identified where an additional drop box would give Oregonians better access to submitting their ballots through this secure method.

Emergency funding of $618,000 would pay for 20 drop boxes and expenses related to an increase in drop box usage. Installation requires coordination with local leaders and quick work to get as many drop boxes as possible functional before the election.

Every voter in Oregon should have access to the same tools to protect their vote, and $154,000 would expand BallotTrax statewide. Currently five counties use this opt-in service that provides updates to voters about their ballot: when it is sent, when their county receives it on the way back, and when their signature has been accepted so their ballot can be counted.

The final $480,000 would allow counties to send voter notification cards to inactive voters to continue the process of clearing out old data on the inactive voter list. Inactive voters do not receive ballots and do not impact the outcome of any election, but proper data management is important.

The funding request advanced with unanimous support and will be considered by the Emergency Board on Thursday.

09/08/26 Oregon – Your State Update – Is YOUR State making sure you have a fair election?? That’s a huge question and it doesn’t matter if it’s a Blue or a Red State, Our Elections are Sacred to our Freedom and our Democracy. What matters isn’t the winner as long as it is the person that we voted for. I sincerely hope you are following your State and DEMANDING they are providing you a fair election. It is your RIGHT, not a privileged. There is a great deal about Oregon’s leadership I personally disagree with but I am proud as hell of their Election Division.
