Oregon Minor Party Status Reviewed, Two Parties Fail to Meet Qualifications

On Wednesday, August 5, in accordance with ORS 248.008, the Secretary of State Elections Division performed the final status review of Oregon’s recognized minor political parties ahead of the November general election.

A recognized minor political party may maintain its status in one of two ways:

  1. At any time during the period between the primary election and the 90th day before the general election, have registered party members equal to at least .25% of all active registered voters in Oregon; or

  2. At any time during the period between the primary election and the 90th day before the general election, have registered party members equal to at least .1% of all votes cast for Governor and, at least once in a 4-year period, secure at least 1% of all votes cast for its presidential or statewide party candidate.

Following the review, it was determined that two minor political parties did not meet the requirements to maintain their recognized status.

The Constitution Party of Oregon and the We The People political party are no longer recognized minor political parties under Oregon law.

Voters registered with either political party will still have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming November election regardless of their party affiliation. Over the coming weeks, county election officials will send every voter impacted by this change a voter notification card showing that their party affiliation is now “other.” Voters may change their party affiliation online at OregonVotes.gov or by submitting a paper voter registration card.

Following this review, six minor political parties maintained their status:

  • Independent Party

  • Libertarian Party

  • No Labels Party

  • Pacific Green Party

  • Progressive Party

  • Working Families Party
