When I was a younger man it was the era of protest. Nixon. The Vietnam War. Kennedy. And we had great songs, Ballad of the Green Berets, One Tin Soldier, and especially Eve of Destruction.
That last one has hung very heavy this past year. Probably more so for me and my generation, because of what we’ve already lived through, what we’ve seen, and what we’ve had to deal with.
But there’s also that line, and this too shall pass. And recently I’ve had a feeling. Not “this too shall pass.” More like, this is passing.
Maybe the next song should be On The Eve Of Redemption.
I feel the time of Trump is coming to an end. The writing is on the wall. Even hardcore MAGA can see it now. Even my MAGA friends, the ones who still believe in the original Trump, see what’s happened. They’re willing to admit this isn’t what they voted for. The corruption isn’t what they voted for. The lies and the betrayal aren’t what they voted for. And no matter what he does now, the damage is done.
It’s been all about him. The MAGA body is dead, even if the brain hasn’t gotten the message yet.
This isn’t meant to slam Trump or slam MAGA. It’s to say, we’re going to move on. So let’s start thinking about where we’re going to go.
The Democrats are going to win. If you bet against them, you’re going to lose. The best chance the Republicans have is Rubio, and he carries the Trump curse the same way Harris carried the Biden curse. Not being nasty. Just speaking the truth.
I’ve always been a conservative. I’ve always registered Republican. I’m now an independent with a lowercase i. No party. No checkbox.
For a moment I’m going to step off my usual neutral track. My only real deviation has always been my distaste and distrust of Trump and the hard right MAGA movement, not the conservative Republican base generally. It seems to me the pendulum is going to swing left. I don’t want it to swing wildly left. I distrust the hard left as much as I distrust the hard right. Moderate. Remember.
So, looking at who’s out there. Who makes sense. Who, in my opinion, is a true American and can represent both sides — liberal and conservative.
I like a team.
I think putting a team together on day one is the smart move. It makes sense. Two people who complement each other, who can genuinely work together, and either of whom could step into the presidency if necessary without the people feeling anxious or uncertain about it.
Lets face it, Trump probably hasn’t been article 25’d because who wants Vance?
The old way, pick one popular candidate at the last minute, then have the party scramble to find a vice president who might help win the election, that’s beyond outdated. It’s a disservice to the office and to us.
So let’s build that team. Announce it from day one.
I’ve already decided on my choice.
I’m not going to tell you yet.
I’d like you to think about it first. Start a few discussions. Throw some names out there. It won’t change my mind right away, and I’ll still tell you what my choice is today.
